Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang remains confident that global tech collaboration will endure, even if the incoming US administration enforces stricter export controls on advanced computing products. His comments, originally reported by Reuters, reflect an optimistic outlook despite rising geopolitical tensions.

During President-elect Donald Trump’s previous term, restrictions on US technology exports to China were imposed, on the grounds of national security—a policy trend that continued under President Joe Biden. The restrictions pushed Nvidia, the world’s leading manufacturer of AI chips, to modify its product offerings for the Chinese market.

Despite these hurdles, Nvidia recently reported record-breaking quarterly revenue, driven by rising demand for AI chips. Investors are apprehensive, however, since relations between the United States and China could worsen under a renewed Trump administration.

“Open science and global collaboration—cooperation across math and science—have been around for a very long time. They are the foundation of social and scientific advancement,” Huang said, during a visit to Hong Kong.

Trump’s tariff push: A divisive strategy

Trump has consistently championed tariffs as a tool for reshaping trade and bringing manufacturing jobs back to the US. In a recent interview on Joe Rogan’s podcast, he criticised the CHIPS Act—a bipartisan law signed in 2022 to boost US semiconductor production—calling it “so bad.” Instead of subsidies, Trump proposed imposing tariffs on semiconductors imported from Taiwan, arguing this would pressure companies like TSMC to build more facilities in the US.

Not everyone agrees with this approach. William Reinsch, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, pointed out that TSMC is already constructing a fab in Arizona. “Tariffs aren’t going to make that move any faster. If anything, they might complicate the effort,” Reinsch said.

What it means for Nvidia and the industry

If tariffs on Taiwanese semiconductors become a reality, companies like Nvidia and AMD, which depend heavily on chips from the region, could face significant cost increases. While these expenses might be passed down to customers, the ripple effects would likely be felt across the broader tech industry.

Huang was careful when addressing these uncertainties. “Whatever happens, we’ll balance compliance with laws and policies, continue to advance our technology, and support customers worldwide,” he said.

Beyond the tariff dispute, Huang addressed an important issue: the energy demands of AI technologies. “If the world uses more energy to power the AI factories of the world, we’re a better world when that happens,” he said. Huang proposed sustainable solutions, like locating AI supercomputers in remote areas and powering them with renewable energy.

“My hope and dream is that, in the end, we’ll all see that using energy for intelligence is the best use of energy,” Huang added, emphasising AI’s potential to address global challenges like carbon capture and designing more efficient wind turbines.

The stakes for US chip manufacturing

Reshoring chip production has become a pressing national security concern for the United States, particularly since the pandemic exposed flaws in global supply chains. According to a 2023 US International Trade Commission report, Taiwan accounted for 44% of US logic chip imports in 2021. A major disruption in Taiwanese production could cause chip prices to rise by up to 59%.

The CHIPS Act seeks to address these risks, and numerous companies have already invested in US facilities. However, Trump’s proposed tariffs may complicate further efforts, potentially reducing profit margins for companies such as Nvidia.

Reactions to Trump’s tariff proposal have been mixed. Dan Newman, CEO of Futurum Group, sees it as more political theatre than a concrete plan. “Trump is unlikely to move forward with anything that hurts the economy,” Newman said.

Lori Yue, a professor at Columbia Business School, takes a different view. She believes there’s a good chance Trump could follow through on the tariffs. Yue also noted that deregulation under a Trump administration might help offset some of the financial strain on chip companies.

A new chapter for AI and innovation

Huang wrapped up his visit to Hong Kong with an optimistic note. Speaking to graduates at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he received an honorary doctorate in engineering, he reflected on the transformative power of AI.

“The age of AI has started,” he said. “The whole world is reset. You’re at the starting line with everybody else. An industry is being reinvented. You now have the instruments necessary to advance science in so many different fields.”

While uncertainties around US tech policies loom, Huang’s message was clear: the future of innovation is bright, led by a new generation ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
