  • Despite sanctions, Huawei grows 22% to $118.3bn in 2024.
  • But margins tighter as R&D investment in AI and cars bites.

Huawei has dealt a stunning blow to US technology restrictions, reporting a massive 860 billion yuan ($118.3 billion) in revenue for 2024.

The Chinese tech giant’s 22% year-over-year surge – its strongest since 2016 – demonstrates how trade sanctions have unexpectedly fuelled rather than hindered its growth.

What makes the financial triumph particularly intriguing is Huawei’s strategic repositioning. While many expected the company to falter under US sanctions that cut off access to advanced semiconductors and critical technologies, Huawei instead concentrated on innovation.

The company’s chairman, Howard Liang Hua, attributes the company’s success to explosive growth in consumer electronics and a rapidly expanding smart car division. However, the transformation came at a cost – net profits declined 13.7% to 62.9 billion yuan in the first nine months of 2024, reflecting massive R&D investments.

Huawei: Beyond tech sanctions

The company’s cloud computing unit recently integrated DeepSeek’s AI models into its Ascend cloud service, matching the performance of premium global GPU platforms. Coupled with Liang’s assertion that AI is “at an accelerated stage of development,” Huawei is signalling its ambition to lead rather than follow in emerging technologies.

Guangdong Communist Party chief Huang Kunming’s praise of Huawei’s “leading digital technology” underscores a broader reality: the company has become a symbol of China’s resilience. The revenue figure announced Wednesday – second only to Huawei’s 2020 peak of 891 billion yuan – demonstrates that trade restrictions while challenging, haven’t dampened the company’s order books.

Growth trajectory sustainable

While Huawei has successfully pivoted to alternative revenue streams and doubled down on R&D, the pressure on profit margins suggests challenges ahead. The company’s consumer business revival and expansion into smart cars show promise. But the need for technological self-sufficiency in a fractured global tech landscape presents opportunities and obstacles.

As 2025 progresses, Huawei’s journey offers valuable insights into the evolving nature of global tech competition. The company’s ability to thrive under pressure challenges assumptions about the effectiveness of trade restrictions. Innovation and strategic adaptation can create unexpected paths to growth in even the most challenging circumstances.

For the technology industry, Huawei’s performance in 2024 may mark a turning point. Huawei’s example suggests that adversity, correctly used, can become a powerful driver of technological advancement.
