The global cloud computing market is expected to hit a value of nearly $950 billion by 2026, a figure that’s bigger than the GDP of most countries. Yet, behind this booming industry, many businesses and professionals struggle to manage the cloud provision they’re tasked with building, using, and maintaining. 69% of IT leaders admitted to overspending on cloud resources last year, while 82% said managing cloud costs is their biggest headache.

The cloud is now a mature enough technology that its promises of efficiency should easily be realised, but only if you know how to harness the technology. For many, cloud infrastructure and services offer Ferrari levels of performance, but are used for tasks akin to delivering pizza. Quick, sure, but hardly efficient.

The real challenge isn’t about working hard to achieve desired results from the cloud but working in smart ways: Imagine trying to clean a mansion with a toothbrush instead of a vacuum – a lot of effort, indubitably great results, but not the best use of resources.

Businesses using the cloud can often fall into the trap of overloading resources because of lack of optimisation, or over-provisioning and wasting money. Instead, organisations might consider establishing Cloud Centres of Excellence (CCoEs). That means creating a dedicated team of experts to oversee all elements of cloud operations and helping the organisation avoid costly errors.

This approach helps align cloud use with business goals, reducing waste and improving performance. Instead of a mindset that starts with figuring out just how many S3 Buckets are needed, a business-focused team learns the organisation’s goals, and provisions (and continually optimises) for the desired outcome. Ironically, there are cloud technologies that help with just this process.

Over the course of the next couple of articles, we’ll be looking at cloud best practice, and discovering the tools and methods that will bring cloud back into a role of a useful toolbox addition, rather than a one-size-fits-all (and often expensive) magical elixir.

Learning the new cloud tools

Automation has to be the ultimate superhero in starring in the cloud computing movie. Automating routine tasks saves time and reduces the risk of human error. In 2025, automation might mean having an AI assistant managing your resources, cutting costs while you focus on big-picture strategies. For CEOs, prioritising sustainability in cloud practices can bring double rewards – lower expenses and a greener, more energy-efficient computing platform.

For students stepping onto the bottom rung of a career in cloud computing, learning automation tools and cloud optimisation strategies can be a game-changer and continuous learning is the best approach. Keeping up with certifications, experimenting with tools in the home lab, and building as much practical experience professionally – these are the best ways to keep on top of necessary skills and create interest from potential employers.

The cloud world moves quickly, and staying ahead means staying curious. Professionals already in the industry can level up their CV/resume by embracing AI and analytics, and exploring new ways of turning organisational data into actionable insights.

Ultimately, success in cloud computing isn’t about clocking up long hours at work but about making every hour count. Whether you’re a student preparing for certifications, a professional managing increasing workloads, or a CEO shaping strategies, the cloud rewards those who adapt and innovate. So, let’s drop the toothbrush, pick up the vacuum, and clean up cloud inefficiencies the smart way! The future of cloud computing isn’t just about being in the cloud; it’s about soaring through it with purpose and precision.
