In this exclusive Q&A in advance of his speaking engagement at Digital Transformation Expo Europe, Ranbir Sinha, Software Engineering Leader at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, shares how KLM’s engineering teams are spearheading a robust digital transformation by balancing agility, operational resilience, and legacy system modernisation. Drawing on DevOps, cloud-native architecture, agile frameworks, and OKRs, Sinha outlines KLM’s pragmatic, high-stakes approach, one that global tech teams can mirror when evolving mission-critical systems.

How does KLM’s software engineering function enable broader digital transformation?

At KLM, software engineering sits at the heart of our digital transformation. Our engineering teams are not just builders – they’re strategic partners who collaborate closely with business units to co-create digital solutions. By using modern engineering practices like DevOps, cloud-native development, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), we’re able to deliver new capabilities rapidly and reliably. The let KLM respond quickly to customer needs, optimise operations, and create seamless, innovative digital experiences in the entire travel journey.

What’s your approach to modernising legacy systems in a mission-critical environment?

Modernising legacy systems in an airline environment requires balancing innovation with stability. Our approach is pragmatic and incremental: we begin by identifying areas that provide the most business value and the highest risk reduction. We use techniques like strangler patterns, where new services are built alongside existing systems, gradually replacing them without disrupting operations. Key to our success is robust testing, automation, and close collaboration between engineering and operations teams to ensure that mission-critical functions remain reliable as we modernize.

How do you ensure engineering teams are aligned with transformation outcomes?

Alignment starts with clear communication of the vision and desired outcomes. We invest in creating shared goals between business and engineering, often using agile methodologies to foster transparency and regular feedback loops. OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) are used to track progress and ensure everyone understands how their work contributes to the larger transformation. We also prioritise a culture of continuous learning, where teams are empowered to experiment, share knowledge, and adapt quickly to changes in direction.

What’s been the most significant technological shift in your transformation roadmap?

The move to a cloud-native architecture has been the most significant shift. Transitioning from monolithic, on-premise systems to cloud-native solutions in the cloud has unlocked scalability, resilience, and agility. It has enabled us to innovate faster, improve uptime, and use data more effectively to personalise customer experiences and optimise operations. The shift has also paved the way for adopting technologies like AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics.

What can attendees expect to learn from your session at TechEx?

Attendees will gain practical insights into how a global airline approaches digital transformation at scale. I’ll share real-world examples of modernizing legacy platforms, fostering cross-functional collaboration, and driving cultural change in engineering teams. Expect actionable takeaways on balancing innovation with operational reliability, as well as lessons learned – both successes and challenges – on our journey to becoming a truly digital airline.
