D-Wave Quantum has been participating in multiple technology events this September, including FintechNation 25, Quantum World Congress, and SEMICON Taiwan. The company’s leadership team has been showcasing how quantum annealing technology is growing in capability, demonstrating new technical progress.
At FintechNation 25 in Dublin, Ireland on Friday September 19, VP of quantum technology evangelism at D-Wave, Murray Thom, will be discussing the latest quantum computing innovations relevant to the financial services sector.
Quantum annealing is a specific type of quantum computing unlike that used by general-purpose quantum computers, as developed by IBM or Google, for example. Annealing technology is still in its early stages, yet is relatively mature in the financial sector, where effective statistical analysis of large data sets can create operational advantages.
It’s said that Quantum annealing can explore much larger solution spaces than classical algorithms, which is effective in investment portfolio optimisation and asset allocation. The technology has the potential to find elements of portfolios with better risk-adjusted returns. It handles factors like liquidity requirements and regulatory limits, plus can consider internal factors such as ESG (environmental, social, and governance) policy. Several institutions including Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase, and Goldman Sachs are exploring D-Wave’s systems for these purposes, and early results have shown potential for modest improvements over classical computing methods.
There are also projects currently under way in the industry focused on risk assessment, which historically has meant running computationally expensive simulations on traditional infrastructure.
Fraud prevention also requires data parsing on large scales, and quantum computing is considered a possible way to achieve faster identification of anomalous transactions at high speed.
Limits in numbers of stable qubits and the specialist knowledge required to combine classical and quantum computing mean that the practical implementation of quantum technologies such as annealing into financial systems is still in its very early stages, albeit an area that is seeing relatively large investment.
