- Bitcoin value surges close to record highs during turbulent trading.
- The US SEC unveils task force to reshape cryptocurrency regulations.
Bitcoin grabbed attention on Tuesday as its price surged during a volatile trading session, approaching its previous session’s record high. The rise followed a significant announcement from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which unveiled plans to establish a task force dedicated to overhauling digital asset regulations.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency had earlier reached an all-time high of $109,071 on Monday, coinciding with Donald Trump’s inauguration as the self-proclaimed “cryptocurrency president.” Investors initially celebrated his pledges to support the cryptocurrency industry, but enthusiasm dimmed after cryptocurrency failed to appear in Trump’s first-day executive orders. Despite this, Bitcoin rose 3.8% on Tuesday, while Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation, gained 1.4%.
The SEC’s announcement was a big step toward meeting the industry’s long-standing demand for regulatory clarity. Acting SEC Chair Mark Uyeda, appointed by Trump, emphasised the task force’s role in bringing structure to the evolving sector. “The Task Force’s focus will be to help the Commission draw clear regulatory lines, provide realistic paths to registration, craft sensible disclosure frameworks, and deploy enforcement resources judiciously,” Uyeda’s office stated.
Mixed signals from the market
While Bitcoin’s rise drew attention, not everyone in the cryptocurrency world was optimistic. Some analysts warned that the lack of immediate policy announcements from Trump could lead to further volatility. Geoffrey Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, remarked, “The digital asset market is disappointed to not have been mentioned in the inauguration speech or Day One executive orders. I suspect Bitcoin will end up going lower so long as we get no news from Trump on digital assets. A break back below $100,000 seems inevitable.”
Adding to the uncertainty, Trump’s $TRUMP-branded meme coin, which launched last week amid much fanfare, saw its value slide by Tuesday, according to CoinMarketCap. Meanwhile, World Liberty Financial, another Trump-linked cryptocurrency initiative, announced on Monday that it had raised $300 million during an initial token sale and would issue additional tokens.
Critics argue that Trump’s involvement in cryptocurrency raises ethical concerns, especially given the volatility of digital assets, despite his pledge to transfer business control to his children.
Industry leaders applaud SEC’s initiative
For many in the industry, the SEC’s announcement provided a glimmer of hope in an otherwise turbulent market. Paul Grewal, Chief Legal Officer at Coinbase, praised the agency’s move, describing it as a long-overdue step. “We’ve been asking for clear rules for years, and the answer was always ‘no.’ Today feels different,” Grewal said in a phone interview.
Jonathan Jachym, Kraken’s global head of policy, had similar comments, calling the action a “meaningful first step.” He added, “We look forward to accelerating our policy engagement to establish regulatory clarity.”
The new task force will also help lawmakers craft cryptocurrency-related legislation and work with other federal bodies, including the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), as well as state and international agencies. The coordinated approach marks a shift from the previous administration’s regulatory position, which many in the industry criticised as overly aggressive.
Trump’s crypto agenda under scrutiny
Trump campaigned on promises to support cryptocurrency adoption and dismantle the restrictive policies of his predecessor. During Biden’s administration, the SEC pursued aggressive enforcement actions against major cryptocurrency companies like Coinbase and Kraken, alleging violations of securities laws. The companies argued that the rules were inappropriate for cryptocurrencies and failed to define when a digital token qualifies as a security.
Trump’s new administration seems determined to change the narrative. Reuters reported that Trump is expected to issue executive orders in the coming days to reduce regulatory scrutiny of the cryptocurrency industry. The orders have the potential to increase the adoption of digital assets by allowing banks to trade cryptocurrencies and manage cryptocurrency portfolios for wealthy clients.
Jeremy Allaire, CEO of stablecoin issuer Circle, expressed optimism about the possible impact of these policy changes. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Allaire predicted that executive orders would be issued soon, giving financial institutions more freedom to engage in cryptocurrency transactions. “The changes could transform the industry,” Allaire said.
Challenges on the horizon
Despite the optimism, the road ahead remains uncertain. The digital asset market continues to grapple with the absence of concrete policies, which leaves room for speculation and volatility. Analysts warn that even with regulatory clarity on the horizon, the cryptocurrency industry must prepare for difficulties like market stability, enforcement actions, and global coordination.
Trump’s personal ventures in the cryptocurrency space have also attracted criticism. Ethics experts argue that his involvement, whether direct or indirect, creates conflicts of interest and risks fueling speculative bubbles.
Nonetheless, the business remains cautiously optimistic. The SEC’s announcement is viewed as an important step toward the end of what many have called the “regulation by enforcement” era. With clear rules, companies can innovate and expand without fear of unexpected crackdowns.
For the time being, all eyes are on President Trump and his administration’s next moves. Will the promises of a “cryptocurrency president” lead to actual change? As Bitcoin approaches record highs, the stakes could not be higher for a sector seeking stability and growth.
