A quiet change is spreading across supermarket aisles in the United States. Small paper price tags are being replaced with tiny digital screens, turning shelves into connected devices that can update prices in minutes instead of hours.

The shift is now happening at scale. Walmart is expanding digital shelf labels across its US stores, building on earlier deployments that already cover roughly 2,300 locations, according to company disclosures and industry reports. The retailer has signalled plans to extend the technology across more stores as it updates its in-store systems.

The move reflects a wider shift in how large retailers run their stores. Pricing updates, product placement, and inventory tracking are increasingly handled through software rather than manual work on the shop floor.

From paper tags to connected shelves

Digital shelf labels are small electronic displays attached to store shelves. They replace printed paper price tags and connect to a central pricing system that can update prices across a store at once.

In a typical supermarket, workers may need to change thousands of labels every week. Each item requires a printed tag, and staff walk through aisles replacing them by hand. During large promotions or seasonal changes, the process can take hours or even days.

With digital labels, price updates can happen much faster. Store staff can push changes through a central system, which updates the displays within minutes. Reports on Walmart’s rollout say the technology reduces the need for workers to manually replace tags and helps stores keep shelf prices aligned with checkout systems.

The labels can also support other store tasks. Some versions include small LED lights that can blink when employees are picking items for online orders or restocking shelves. The visual cues help workers locate products more quickly, which is useful in large stores with tens of thousands of items.

Automation and data behind the shelf

The displays themselves are simple devices, but they connect to the software that manages pricing and inventory across a store network.

Retailers use internal systems to track sales data, inventory levels, and demand patterns across thousands of products. That information helps store managers decide when to adjust prices, launch promotions, or replenish stock.

The shelf label becomes the final step in that process. Once a price is updated in the retailer’s system, the digital tag reflects the change automatically.

The technology has drawn public attention because it makes rapid price updates easier. Some shoppers worry that electronic price tags could allow stores to adjust prices frequently, similar to airline tickets or ride-hailing fares.

Retailers say their systems are not designed for surge pricing. Walmart has said its digital labels are meant to improve price accuracy and efficiency, not to change prices dynamically based on demand.

Studies looking at grocery chains that use electronic shelf labels have also found little evidence that the technology leads to constant price increases. Instead, it is mainly used to manage promotions and update discounts more efficiently.

Even so, the ability to change prices quickly has sparked debate. Lawmakers in several US states have raised questions about whether electronic shelf labels could make pricing less transparent for shoppers.

A technology spreading across retail

Walmart’s rollout is part of a broader shift across the retail sector. Electronic shelf labels, often called ESLs, have been widely used in parts of Europe for years but have spread more slowly in North America.

That pattern appears to be changing as retailers update stores to support online shopping and automated inventory systems.

Industry research shows the global electronic shelf label market was valued at about US$2.09 billion in 2025 and could reach roughly US$7.32 billion by 2033, according to Grand View Research. The growth reflects rising interest in store automation and digital price management.

Retail analysts say large chains are adopting the technology partly because stores now serve two roles. They are both retail locations for shoppers and fulfilment hubs for online orders.

Many supermarkets now handle delivery and curbside pickup orders alongside in-store shopping. That requires faster inventory updates and clearer product location tools for staff.

Digital shelf labels help support that system. When connected to store software, they can guide workers to items needed for online orders and highlight shelves that need restocking.

What it means for workers and shoppers

For store employees, the technology may reduce repetitive tasks. Workers spend less time replacing paper tags and more time assisting customers or preparing online orders.

Retailers also say digital labels help reduce pricing errors. When paper tags fall out of sync with store systems, customers sometimes see a different price at checkout. Because electronic labels update at the same time as the store database, the shelf price and register price are more likely to match.

Shoppers may notice only subtle changes at first. The digital displays often look similar to printed price tags, though some include small icons or lights.

The larger change happens behind the scenes. As shelves become connected devices, stores gain new tools to manage pricing and inventory through software.

That shift reflects a broader move toward automation and data-driven retail operations. Systems that once focused mainly on online shopping are increasingly being applied inside physical stores.

The digital shelf labels from Walmart show how that shift is reaching one of the most ordinary parts of shopping: the price tag on the shelf.
