Alongside ‘AI‘, the word ‘quantum’ has become the latest buzzword in tech marketing, and Samsung has decided to jump on the bandwagon with the launch of Galaxy Quantum 5. This newest of smartphones has launched exclusively in South Korea, and is a Galaxy A55 that’s been given a dose of supposed quantum enhancement.Â
In collaboration with SK Telecom and ID Quantique, Samsung claims this fifth-generation “quantum” smartphone combines cutting-edge quantum technology with its Knox security platform, promising users unprecedented security for mobile applications and services.Â
But as we peel back the layers of hype surrounding this device, one can’t help but wonder: Is the Galaxy Quantum 5 indeed a quantum leap in mobile security, or is it just another case of quantum-washing – slapping the word “quantum” on a product to make it sound more advanced than it is?
This chip in Galaxy Quantum 5Â is hardly a quantum leap in technology
To dive deeper, it is necessary first to understand that the smartphone is claimed to be “quantum-powered” due to its Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) chip. The smartphone’s core specifications otherwise remain consistent with the Galaxy A55. A 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and HDR10+ support. It is powered by the Exynos 1480 processor, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The device runs on Android 14 and supports four major OS updates.
