A growing race to build space-based data hubs
The push for space-based data centres is intensifying, fueled by lower rocket launch costs, copious solar energy outside the Earth’s atmosphere, and innovative cooling technologies. Startups are looking to space as the next frontier for data infrastructure, especially to meet the surging computational demands of AI and other advanced technologies.
Lonestar has already secured a roster of customers, including the State of Florida, the Isle of Man government, AI firm Valkyrie, and pop rock band Imagine Dragons. The Freedom data centre will run on solar power and utilise naturally-cooled solid-state drives, with additional ground-based backup provided by Flexential’s data centre in Tampa, Florida.
Europe’s vision for space-based data centres
While Lonestar is leading the push on lunar data centres, Europe is also exploring the potential of space-based facilities to meet the growing energy demands of the digital age. A project called Advanced Space Cloud for European Net Zero Emission and Data Sovereignty (ASCEND), led by Thales Alenia Space on behalf of the European Commission, recently concluded that such data centres are not only feasible but could also help the region meet its carbon neutrality goals by 2050.
“The idea [is] to take off part of the energy demand for data centres and to send them in space to benefit from infinite energy, which is solar energy,” said Damien Dumestier, project manager for ASCEND. However, Thales’s study also highlighted challenges, particularly the need for more sustainable rocket technology. ArianeGroup, one of the project’s participants, is working on reusable, eco-friendly launchers that could make large-scale deployment of space-based data centres possible. The goal is to develop these launchers by 2035, for an operational system in place by 2050.
Tackling the challenges of space-based data centres
While the concept of data centres in space is exciting, it comes with major technical challenges. Space is an unforgiving environment, requiring innovative engineering solutions to overcome challenges.
Reaching space is a difficult task. During launch, rockets produce intense vibrations and high g-forces, which can cause havoc on fragile hardware. Rotational hard drives are not sufficiently robust for this environment; thus, durable solid-state drives (SSDs) are the better option for space-based storage.
Radiation is another serious threat. High-energy particles in the form of galactic cosmic rays can corrupt memory or destroy transistors, cutting short the lifespan of essential components. Engineers mitigate these risks with error-correcting memory and radiation shielding to protect sensitive systems. Cooling systems also need to be completely redesigned. On Earth, cooling relies on convection, but in microgravity, this process doesn’t work. Space-based systems, like those on the International Space Station, rely on ammonia-filled radiators to dissipate heat effectively.
Space-based infrastructure must also withstand micrometeorite impacts and extreme temperature fluctuations. Engineers depend on high-stress materials like stainless steel and titanium, as well as protective layers of gold or silver foil, to manage radiation and temperature. Kevlar and Nextel layers offer further protection against micrometeorites, while external thermal blankets insulate the infrastructure from extreme cold and heat.
Chris Quilty, co-CEO of research firm Quilty Space, summed up the stakes: “When you launch a satellite into space, it’s binary. If it fails, it’s dead. There’s no way to recover it. There are no ways to fix it.”
The future of space data centres
Lonestar’s mission represents a step toward transforming space into a data hub. Alongside Europe’s efforts through the ASCEND project, the concept of space-based data centres is gaining traction. The ventures could reshape how businesses approach data storage, disaster recovery, and sustainability. While challenges remain, the potential benefits of looking beyond Earth to solve terrestrial problems are too significant to ignore.
