Businesses are set to benefit from new network routes between the East Coast of the US and Europe, developed by digital infrastructure company, Colt. This comes as demand for bandwidth and data capacity between the US and Europe grows. In fact, the cables beneath the Atlantic are the world’s busiest data highway, with new routes providing organisations with the option to receive low latency performance and more secure pathways.

Colt’ new transatlantic subsea route and fibre networks is designed to meet the needs of data-heavy workloads, largely generated by AI, cloud, and streaming. The newly-developed transatlantic subsea cables are capable of transferring 55% more data than their transpacific counterparts, the company claims.

“We’re building and managing the most valuable, sustainable digital infrastructure in the world: quantum secure, AI-ready and engineered to be sustainable and smart at every layer,” says Buddy Bayer, chief operating officer, Colt Technology Services.

Some major cloud platforms and content companies are among the earliest users of Colt’s new network infrastructure, with the same large providers already responsible for over 80% of all cross-border data traffic.

Colt’s network expansion offers its customers and partners increased capacity on the Marea subsea cable, spanning around 6.600km (4,100 miles) from Virginia Beach to Bilbao, Spain. The company will lease its dedicated fibre capacity in the undersea cable rather than offering the entirety of the cable itself. The new routes also provide investment opportunities in new high bandwidth fibre routes connecting key Atlantic cable landing stations.

The scale of the routes is effectively a new network backbone, the company says, one that links New York to Ashburn, Virginia, an area known as “Data Centre Alley” due to its large concentration of data centres. Colt customers can also benefit from diverse, high-capacity transatlantic routing options, with improved resilience and backup options. New end-to-end connectivity between the US and Europe is possible with 100G/400G wave options available for businesses requiring the best possible network capacity.

Colt’s infrastructure is growing; the company now boasts four connected cable landing stations on the East Coast of the US, as well as on-net options in ten transatlantic subsea cable systems.
