  • Many PCs can’t be upgraded to Windows 11.

When Microsoft ended support for Windows 10, it exposed a major operational fault line in global IT estates. Millions of machines, from office desktops to industrial control PCs, are now running software that will never again receive a security patch.

According to several industry trackers, around 40% of all active Windows installations still run Windows 10. Many organisations – particularly in the SME and public sectors – have yet to upgrade, deterred by hardware limitations or the cost of replacement. Unlike past transitions, the shift to Windows 11 requires newer processors, more memory, and the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 security chip. For many older systems, that’s a non-starter.

The operational dilemma from Windows 10

Enterprises now face a difficult choice: run unsupported software and risk security exposure, or fund an accelerated hardware refresh. Some are delaying action, assuming security through obscurity. Others are exploring creative workarounds, including migrating to open-source platforms.

For smaller businesses and tech-savvy users, Linux distributions like Zorin OS, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint have become viable alternatives. Zorin’s latest release, timed to coincide with Windows 10’s end-of-life date on 14 October, aims to capture users stranded by Microsoft’s upgrade criteria. The Pro version carries a modest licence fee, while its community edition remains free.

The enterprise landscape

Corporate users are in a better position – though not by much. Microsoft’s own telemetry suggests that a majority of enterprise devices have now moved to Windows 11, but legacy systems persist in sectors reliant on bespoke software or industrial control systems. These machines are often tied to older hardware or unmaintained applications, and represent a significant cybersecurity risk.

Malware migration from home environments to enterprise networks is another concern. Once consumer PCs lose patch coverage, they can act as infection vectors via shared devices, cloud storage, BYOD or email. For CISOs, this raises the urgency of endpoint visibility and segmentation strategies.

Strategic options for CIOs and CTOs with Windows 10 clients

Organisations unwilling or unable to retire legacy Windows systems still have choices – each with trade-offs in cost, complexity, and risk:

  • Virtualise legacy systems.
    Running older Windows versions in virtual machines isolates them from the main network yet maintains operational continuity. Regular snapshots enable quick rollback in the event of a compromise or software failure.
  • Deploy thin clients.
    Converting Windows 10 machines into thin clients connected to cloud-based Windows 11 desktops allows organisations to keep existing hardware in service and get the benefits of current OS security and features.
  • Migrate to open source.
    For non-Windows-dependent workloads, Linux or FreeBSD extends hardware lifespans and reduces licence costs. However, IT leaders should factor in training and support overheads that can offset those savings.

The human and compliance factor

Beyond technical planning, enterprise leaders must consider user readiness and compliance exposure. Shifting operating systems affects workflows, endpoint management policies, and sometimes, the entire software ecosystem. Poorly managed transitions risk operational disruption and employee resistance – issues often underestimated in IT lifecycle planning.

Possible actions for enterprise

  • Assess hardware readiness: Conduct a full audit of Windows 10 endpoints and identify upgrade-eligible devices.
  • Segment risk: Isolate or virtualise systems that can’t be upgraded.
  • Review licensing strategy: Evaluate cloud-based desktop options versus on-premise investment.
  • Consider diversification: Explore open-source OS alternatives where feasible.
  • Prioritise user training: Smooth adoption and reduce productivity loss.

Microsoft’s retirement of Windows 10 is a test of enterprise adaptability. For CIOs and CISOs, the task is to transform what could be a forced upgrade into an opportunity to modernise, strengthen security, and rationalise technology spend.
