Colorado, Massachusetts, California, Texas and New York have emerged as the top states for WFH in the US. That’s according to a recent U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey, which examines data from the previous seven days.

Colorado has the highest percentage of remote workers in America: Some 37% of Coloradans surveyed say they regularly work from home, at least one day a week.

While on the opposite end of the spectrum, Mississippi had some of the lowest recorded figures, with just 12% of respondents working from home regularly.

The data collected includes demographic details like age, sex at birth, sexual orientation, income and educational background, and includes all states, plus Washington D.C., and reveals a mix of insights.

Massachusetts ranks highest for the number of cisgender men and women working from home (average 38%), while back in Colorado, women are most likely to work remotely (average 37%).

Unsurprisingly, the physically larger states have a higher number of people working remotely.

California had the highest number of remote workers with 8.8m respondents saying they worked remotely 1-2 days, 3-4 days or 5 days plus.

Similarly, 5.7m of Texan respondents said they worked from home in the previous seven days.

In states with a large presence of tech companies, like California and New York, many respondents appeared to be hybrid working. In New York, 2.5m workers worked for 1-2 days or 3-4 days out of the 4.4m total. While in California, 56% of remote workers were not full-time remote workers.

Follow the money

If you’re seeking a higher salary, Massachusetts could be worth a look. The Bay State had the highest number of workers earning $200,000 or more from home, with eight in ten high-earners regularly working remotely.

On the other end of the scale, Utah is the state to have the most remote workers earning $25,000 or less (20% of all surveyed).

Overall, the census shows that remote workers can earn significantly high salaries. In multinationals, remote work allows teams to collaborate without geographical limits and across multiple time zones.

If you’re ready to make a move to fully remote, there are exciting new roles updated to the TechHQ Jobs Board every week. While the competition for roles can be tougher, due to the broader selection pool, remote-first companies offer high compensation and very tangible benefits.
